HP Printer Update 1.1.1
Also added to the Software Update today is yet another revision to the HP Printer drivers. This has been updated several times since users started having problems with printing on HP printers after updating OS X to 10.5.5
Hopefully this will be the last update in the series and it fixes all the problems. Although printing on my 2 HP printers has been working fine since the first update.

People have been getting in a tiz after last nights announcements that the new aluminium Macbooks no longer supports firewire. Although Firewire 800 will be included in the Macbook Pros.

One of the big reasons for concern is the useful target disk mode which lets you transfer files between 2 mac using a firewire cable. Well, let me tell you there is a cheaper easier and faster way of transferring files between 2 Macs and you don’t even need a firewire cable.
All you need to do is to connect the 2 mac together using either a cat 5e or a cat 6 crossover network cable. This allows you to take advantage of the 1Gb/s speed of the ethernet port. You don’t need a network switch or hub. Just directly connect the the cable between the 2 macs. In fact this will also help prevent aditional network traffic slowing down the file transfers. I don’t know if it even needs to be a crossover cable, but it works for me so I am using one.
There are so many reasons why this is such a great idea.

As usual, Engadget has live coverage for the Apple “The Spotlight turns to notebooks’ event.
The event will start today at 10am PST ( 6pm GMT).
Obviously the announcements will include new Macbooks but will we find out what the “brick” is? There are also talk of new updates for iLife and iWork. I hope so as I just hate MS Office for the Mac and I haven’t really got comfortable with iWork just yet.

My wife’s first generation iPhone developed a fault on Saturday. It was the microphone, it has become very quiet and muffled to the point where it was no longer useable.
We decided to take it back to the Lakeside Apple store on Sunday morning. I wasn’t expecting too much. Even though the phone was within the warranty period I suspected the fault may be caused by some foreign body blocking the microphone. I know my little one has been using it as a high tech baby teether every now and then. I had no idea how their warranty works. How much do they charge for repairs. How long will a repair take? Do they offer a loan?
We arrived at the Apple store at 11:30 am and explained our problem to a member of staff. We were then quickly and efficiently booked for an appointment with a Mac Genius for 12:15 pm. Excellent, no need to stand in a queue. We went for a coffee and came back later.
We arrived for our appointment at the Genius Bar and was seen within a few minutes. The member of staff quickly and easily identified the problem and offered an immediate free replacement! Without any fuss, the sim was replaced into the replacement phone and activated online. The phone was fully charged and we were good to go. We just needed to re-sync the data when we got home.
Well done Apple, you have exceeded our expectations again.
